1. Ask how fast they really are

Some services deliver digests once a day or once a week. Speed wins in federal contracting: a posting you learn about three days late is often a bid you can no longer prepare. Prefer a service that publishes its refresh cadence and its measured latency — not just claims 'real-time'.

2. Check the filters you actually need

You should be able to filter by NAICS code, set-aside type (8(a), WOSB, HUBZone, SDVOSB), buyer agency and deadline. The value of an alert is relevance: thousands of postings daily, and 95% do not fit your business.

3. Demand verifiable freshness

A trustworthy service shows a public live page with last check time, next check and average posted-to-radar latency, so you can compare against SAM.gov itself. If it hides its timing, assume it is slow.

4. Look for early signals and extras

Special Notices and presolicitations precede formal solicitations and give you a head start. Recompete tracking (expiring contracts you can take over) and AI match scoring are useful upgrades once the basics are solid.
